Words by Janus Rasmussen from Kiasmos:

Growing up on the Faroe Islands, the media was always behind, especially back then. So most of what I saw as a kid in the '90s was actually stuff from the '80s, only just making its way to us. That decade still resonates with me deeply, even now.

Blade Runner

The first one that comes to mind is Roy Batty's monologue, the "Like tears in rain" moment from Blade Runner. That scene has taken on a deeper weight as I get older. There's something haunting in how it captures the fragility of memory and existence. It's the kind of thought that keeps me up at night sometimes. I remember watching it again recently at my local art cinema. That moment hit differently, and I felt the hairs on my arms stand up.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

What I love about the intro of Who Framed Roger Rabbit is how it opens with pure cartoon chaos, giving no hint of the live-action world behind it. Then the camera pulls back and suddenly you're on a real film set. It's such a clever reveal. I rewatched it the other day and had completely forgotten about that moment. What a groundbreaking film. It still holds up beautifully and looks absolutely stunning.

Elephant Man

I'm a massive fan of the late, great maestro David Lynch, but somehow I'd never seen The Elephant Man until the day after he died. I wasn't ready for how deeply sad it is-I was teary-eyed through most of the film. One moment that really stayed with me is when he returns to England after being held captive, chased through the train station. Then, in pure agony, he shouts, "I am not an elephant! I am not an animal! I am a human being! I am a man." That scene kind of broke me.

The Thing

I caught John Carpenter's The Thing on a giant cinema screen the other day, and it was amazing. I really love this movie - it's probably one of my all-time favourites. I was eagerly waiting for that infamous chest-chomp scene. You have to see it to believe it, haha. It still looks incredible, totally over the top, but somehow perfectly in tune with the film's tone. What an epic moment!

The NeverEnding Story

There's one film that fascinated me as a kid - the classic The NeverEnding Story from '84. It's packed with epic scenes, so picking just one is hard. But the moment that haunted me was when Atreju watched a knight try to pass the Sphinxes and got zapped by their eyes. That scene traumatised me for some reason, especially when Atreju walks past and sees the knight as a burnt corpse. Man, that freaked me out. The film has so many incredible moments, though... but the horse scene still feels cruel, even today. And this was a kids' movie, yikes!
