The COVID takedown meant many things to many people. For the creative chameleon, Steve Balbi, it was time to peel- back yet another layer of skin to reveal an entirely new pigment – an iridescent sunburst orange in colour, melody and tone – taking time in his home studio. This new fabric of songs will soon take the form of a 12” EP – I think I know for sure – which is due to be released on Friday, August 21.

Reflecting upon living in isolation, Balbi concedes, “It allowed me to sit back, slow down and take stock. It became clear to me what really mattered. Simply, family, friends and creativity are my world. I willingly went back to basics and was inspired to make a body of work that echoes the music that inspired me as a child. It feels as though this record has been waiting for me for years. And it’s the opposite of what seems to be popular right now. Perhaps for that reason alone, I love it even more. I think I know for sure.”

Emerging out of isolation, Balbi will perform two exclusive solo, acoustic shows [both in one night] on Friday the 21^st of August at The Vanguard, featuring resident ray o’ sunshine, Jak Housden. The EARLY show features Balbi solo and acoustic, before he turns the volume up a little for the late show, which will feature his full band, live & electric.

Revered by his contemporaries as a guitarist of immense virtuosity, eloquence and grace, and member of The Whitlams and Tim Minchin’s current band, Jak’s own songwriting paints the kaleidoscope of an artist and cacophony of a craftsman. His voice resplendent sunshine, his synthetic and occasional psychedelic innovations in melody and harmony illustrate his first solo single in over a decade, ‘Bombs’.

What might we expect from Balbi? Well, one never quite knows! Although, for certain, we can all look forward to a passionate and equally enlightening remedy to four months of relative isolation – two distinct shows that will transcend new songs from his forthcoming EP, alongside reimagined out-takes from his diverse catalogue of words and music.

 This is an 18+ event.

Shows will be seated and limited to 50 per sitting, patrons will be seated to allow for social distancing.

Artists to perform two separate sittings, 6.00pm - 8.30pm & 9.30pm - 12.00am.

Dinner & Show packages include entry, seating and a one course meal.

Tickets will need to be pre-purchased, no door sales will be available on the night.

Please adhere to social distancing at all times and follow direction from venue staff.

The venue will be taking a number of precautionary measures to ensure patron safety, including:

- Hand sanitiser dispensers

- Signage and social distancing markers throughout the venue

- Regular sanitising of the venue and full clean between sittings
