Miles Calder and Hemi Hemingway & the Snowflakes
Miles Calder and Hemi Hemingway & The Snowflakes feature in an exciting double billing from two of Pōneke's finest songwriters.
----
Miles Calder released his solo debut album Autopilot Life in 2021, a self-reflective delve into waking up from an unexamined life, dressed in a psychedelic folk-rock palette that evoked late-era Beatles as much as contemporaries like Kevin Morby and Father John Misty. The album won over new fans and critics alike, & led to a nomination for a prestigious Aotearoa Music Award (Te Kaipuoro Taketake Toa | Best Folk Artist 2022).
“If you like Kurt Vile, or Father John Misty, or The Phoenix Foundation, you might quite like this.” - Charlotte Ryan, RNZ Music 101
----
In 2020, after tip-toeing around the idea of a solo project like this one for a while, an experiment with a four-track recorder led Shaun Blackwell to strike the match that would ignite Hemi Hemingway and result in ‘The Lonely Hunter’. A glittering six-track ode to sixties pop, Hemi Hemingway takes his cues from both classic and contemporary influences, harnessing the power and romanticism of The Shirelles and The Walker Brothers, as well as the grit and sparkle of Sheer Mag and Shannon & the Clams. Over the past four months, Hemi has been living again in NZ, collecting Snowflakes for his backing band and putting the final touches on his debut album. Live, Hemingway is a heartsick crooner stood centre-stage dressed all in black, his voice unwavering atop the soothing sparkle created by his Snowflakes who surround him dressed all in white.
“The debut EP from this New Zealand-born, London-based artist (aka Shaun Blackwell) is a solid six-song set offering a modern, noirish take on ‘60s girl-group pop and related styles, combining atmospheric guitars and keyboards and occasional sax with his lilting croon and wistful melodies” - Don Yates, KEXP New Music Reviews
